Avoca's History

Avoca actually started out as a small town called Pleasant Valley, but the name was changed to Avoca in 1887 because there was already a Pleasant Valley, PA. Coal mining was one of the main industries in Avoca, and the town grew quickly during the early 1900s because of all the miners. In 1888, Avoca was the site of the Mud Run Disaster, a tragic train wreck that killed 37 people.
